Planting a Garden

I ended up planting a small garden this year, and now I’m even more excited for the summer to come!

I’m not really a huge vegetable fan, but I’ve always liked the idea of planting a seed or small plant and having it produce something you can eat, so while I probably won’t be doing any of the eating, I’m excited for the growing. Which is going well, at least so far.

We went to Pike’s to get some small plants, and came back with a small assortment. Based on how they were sold (some were sold singularly, some were sold in a 4-pack), we have 1 bell pepper plant, 5 tomato plants, 4 zucchini plants, and 4 cantaloupe plants. We also bought some vegetable and flower soil and some cow manure, since they were going into an area with questionable soil.

My dad tilled the earth and I got to do the fun part – the actual planting! We spaced out the plants and then I got to stick them in the ground, planting each one and then covering the area with pine straw.

It’s been about two weeks since we planted everything, though I have to say there hasn’t been much change. I go out every few days to look at everything, to check on how they are doing. My bell pepper had two flowers, but overall the plant hasn’t grown any bigger. The biggest change is probably the cantaloupes, which I swear have doubled in size since they first went into the ground.

Last weekend we also went to a festival near my house which was having a plant sale, and though our actual garden area was full, I bought two little kale plants for bunny! We planted those in a separate pot, so hopefully it grows big! I just planted those a few days ago though, so it’s hard to say how they’re doing right now.

I know that growing a garden takes time and effort, but I can’t wait until we start getting veggies! Actually, I’m a little worried we’re going to be weighed down with tomatoes, and not have enough bell peppers, but this is just the first year. If all goes well this year, who knows? The garden could expand next year! Pictures and update to come!
