In my quest to exercise more, I’ve been on the lookout for a gym that meets my requirements. These include something close to home and a gym that offers classes. I’m not one of those people that can get on a treadmill and work out by myself for an hour. I need someone telling me what to do, encouraging me and pushing me to work harder. I’ve been searching for something for the past year or so, but I hadn’t found one that had classes at a convenient time, or someplace close enough that I wouldn’t have to fight traffic just to get there. So for the time being I’d been going to a cycling studio once a week and walking. It wasn’t much, but it was something.

Wakeboarding was always one of those things that I thought looked pretty cool, but never thought I would actually get the chance to do. But a few years ago, as we started going out on the lake more, I realized it was something I could do, and it was something that I wanted to do. I didn’t necessarily care whether it was wakeboarding or waterskiing, but I knew that I wanted to try it. I didn’t expect to be an expert or do flips or anything like that, but it seemed like it could be a fun pastime on the water.
A few years ago I took an intro to stand up paddle board class, and it was fun. We basically just learned the basic stroke, and got to practice in a small area. I learned that if a strong breeze blew through, you could be swept away. And I learned that it wasn’t that hard. When I learned the first time, it was March, and the water was cold. There would hopefully be no falling into the water, and there wasn’t. I was shaky, but I felt good as I paddled around, getting used to the stroke, finding my balance. Continue reading
The weather has been so nice recently here, and by that I mean most of February was in the high 60s and 70s. Which was great. All the plants started to think spring was already here, and if you drive through Atlanta you can see everything in bloom. It’s hard to tell it’s still technically winter. Though this week it supposed to be cold, and there may be a frost, I’m counting it as spring, and I’ve already gotten out and about.
With warm weather and more sunshine, it’s easier to get outside of the house to exercise. Continue reading
Last summer, an indoor cycling studio opened near my house. At the time I was looking for a gym and exercise options, and when they had two weeks of free classes for people to come try it out, I thought, why not? It was free, it was exercise, and it was an option.
Not sure what to expect, I signed up for a class and dragged my parents with me. (Hey, it’s good for them too). Without thinking, I didn’t even bring a water bottle. I just showed up in exercise clothes. I didn’t have to worry though – they provided water bottles and water, as well as cycling shoes. I entered the studio, and then spent the next five minutes trying to figure out how to ‘clip in’ to the bike. Continue reading
As many of you know, whenever I meet with one my friends, we try to find a nice place to walk. These typically come in the form of walking trails along mountains, rivers, or lakes in the area. They are places that really aren’t that far away, but for some reason, we just never made it out there.

Recently I visited two different running stores in my search to buy a new pair of walking/running shoes. I had never been to a store selling strictly just running gear, and never would have even known about it if it wasn’t for some of my coworkers. Two of them are really into running, competing in many different road races throughout the year, and they are always eager to offer tips on how to become a better runner. One of these tips included visiting a running store, where they tell you how you run and make sure you get the shoe that is the best fit for you. Continue reading
